7 Things You Can Do To Help Get Rid Of A Beer Belly
What is a "Beer Belly"?
Beer belly, or also commonly known as pot belly, is due to an excess of adipose visceral fat also defined as central obesity, which is where the abdomen protrudes excessively. This body type is known as "apple shaped", as opposed to "pear shaped" in which fat is deposited on the hips and buttocks.
With so much hype and misinformation surrounding this subject its any wonder why most people opt for the "quick fix". As with most things in life; to obtain desired results (goals) there are no short cuts and will require some fundamental lifestyle changes and exchanging some undesired habits for some opportunistic ones. Equally, if you can get past the infomercials selling their "one minuet wonder" ab machines, and magic diet and weight loss pills you'll have a much better chance of actually seeing some proper results.
While there are many things that we can add or adapt in our lifestyles, to achieve the desired results, I have suggested 7 small life changes you can be made to your every day routine to help to get rid of a protruding belly:
# 1: Walk Further
If you are someone who drives to work, try parking your car further away than you would normally. A few blocks further from your usual spot will force you to walk the rest of your journey each day, this enables you to incorporate some exercise into your daily routine. If you take the bus or train try and get off a stop or 2 early (you may want to take a change of shoes for this).
# 2: Avoid Lifts and Escalators
2. Where possible, try to avoid taking lifts and escalators, instead opting for the stairs if they are available. Stairs are a great way in increase both strength and cardiovascular exercise.
# 3: Switch to Green Tea
While arguably, coffee provides a kick start to some peoples day due to the levels of caffeine, it has been proven that green tea has sufficient amounts of caffeine to give a similar boost not to mention, green tea is touted to be one of the healthiest beverages on the planet!
Green tea is loaded with antioxidants that may have many health benefits, including:
An improved brain function
An anticarcinogenic (protection from cancer)
Reducing the risk from heart disease
# 4: Eat Little and Often
The most common meal split is "three main meals", and for some this works just fine, though for some, results in snacking between meals. A simple yet effective split would be a 5 or 6 meals. It is proven that smaller healthy meals throughout the day, can increase your metabolism thus burning more fat.
# 5: Eat Like a King In The Morning
When considering your meal splits (as suggested in #4),
it is advantageous to consume larger meals earlier in the day when your body is more likely to need and use the energy and reduce your portions, consuming smaller meal in the evening when any unspent/consumed energy will be stored as fat. A good expression to remember is;- "Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper" but a reminder is to try and split this into 5 or 6 meals instead of the usual 3.
# 6: Drink Plenty of Water
It is suggested that we drink 6-8 glasses of water (or other fluid) to remain hydrated and replace normal daily water loss.
Water has many more health benefits on top of hydration such as appetite suppression, metabolism stimulant, aid normal body waste removal and regular function, health skin and much more.
# 7: Mindful Posture
Being conscious of your posture and mindful of how you hold yourself when sat or during your day to day routine is a good way to start using (exercising) the deep abdominal muscle layer commonly referred to as you "TVA (Transverse Abdominis)", which is a great start to reducing bally fat. Another good, "conscious", "exercise you do, is "core activation"; drawing in your stomach towards your spine (without holding your breath) and hold for as long as you can. The goal is to see how long you can hold it in for and beat your time every.
If you work at a computer setting yourself a calendar reminder to 'activate your core' several times a day will help to remind you. Alternatively if you don't work at a computer set an alarm such as on your watch or phone. This is one of my favourite "quick tips" as it can be done from almost anywhere and discreetly.
Adding these 7 little tips to your daily routine, could make the world of difference to helping bust the beer belly. These coupled together with a proper diet and exercise, play an equal and important part to the end goal and ultimately results.
